Kentucky Kingdom’s HalloScream – Kingdom of Fear

The children’s area of the park, King Louie’s Playland, will operate each evening from 6:00 until 9:00. Aside from the rides, kids will enjoy receiving Halloween treats and having their picture taken with not-so-scary Halloween characters!

The park’s thrill rides, including the roller coasters, will operate until 10:00 p.m. each night, offering a special experience for those who have never ridden a coaster at night!

HalloScream – Kingdom of Fear” will really come alive as darkness descends. The new HalloScream attractions, to which an entire area of the park is devoted, was designed and produced by Oak Island Creative, an award-winning company that has achieved international recognition for producing spectacular themed events.

Ed Hart, President and CEO of Kentucky Kingdom, said: “We are very excited about partnering with Oak Island Creative, a company that has developed award-winning themed events for nationally recognized clients. Their events have received many acknowledgments in USA Today, on Fox News, and in other major media outlets. What’s even more exciting is that Oak Island is a local company, headquartered in Louisville. They are dedicated to creating a Halloween event unlike anything Louisville has seen before and they’re certainly the people to do it.”

At 9:00 each night, a voodoo-inspired “Mardi gRAVE” dance party will kick off in the HalloScream area, with a demonic DJ spinning twisted tunes that are sure to wake the dead!

Along with the rides and entertainment, new food and drinks are being served as well. The food offerings are all really good, the park’s executive chef did an excellent job creating not only unique items, but they made sure they were tasty too! Frank’s Monster Burger is big enough to share!

Exclusive HalloScream merchandise is also available.

Kentucky Kingdom will be open for HalloScream every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in October, from 6:00 p.m. till midnight (closing time on Sunday is 11:00 p.m.). Most of the park’s rides, including its signature coasters, will be open. All Kentucky Kingdom attractions are included with the price of admission, including a 12-minute fear fest incorporating the scariest scenes from the famous “Friday the 13th” films, which will be screened at the park’s 5D Cinema.

2019 season pass holders receive free admission to HalloScream. However, they will need to pay a $10 admission charge to each haunted house. 2020 Kentucky Kingdom season passes are on sale now for the early bird price of $59.95 and they provide free admission to HalloScream 2019 and one free entry to each haunted house! For tickets and more information, visit the official Kentucky Kingdom website by clicking here.

Having a Six Flags Over Georgia Halloween

October has finally come around and we all know that means pumpkin spice lattes, leaves, and haunted events! Halloween is our favorite holiday here at Coaster Insanity, so we had to make sure we visited our home park of Six Flags Over Georgia to check out Fright Fest.

This year’s Fright Fest is back September 24 to November 2, you don’t want to miss it. New for 2019 is Piggy’s Blood Shed, an outdoor walk through of a bloody butcher’s revenge path – this one actually made us jump! There are shows, scare zones, and plenty of haunted houses to keep you scared all night.  Madeline Mendoza’s Casa De Muerte is a neat play on Día de Muertos with 3D googles to boot. If you love zombies, you’ll love the ZX-1: Aftermath house, just make sure you check out this house once it gets dark for the full ambiance.

If fear isn’t your thing, the ride lines are typically shorter during these events so it’s a great time to marathon GASM, Goliath, or even the new RMC Twisted Cyclone.  We got a chance to ride Twisted Cyclone for the first time at this event and it didn’t disappoint. RMC did a great job with Twisted Cyclone and the space they had to work in.

Coasting Around Europe

We recently returned from a trip to Europe, visiting 5 countries, 10 theme parks, and several Kermesses (Festivals), and rode 82 roller coasters during this whirlwind of a trip. Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, France, & Luxembourg were all amazing countries to visit, with some extraordinarily friendly people, fun rides, and great food!

All in all we drove around 2,000 miles (3200 km) around Europe. The driving was quite nice and the scenery was beautiful. Renting a car and driving is completely do-able, but if you aren’t big on driving in a foreign country the public transportation in Europe is incredible. A lot of the parks had a train station close by so you could easily do the trip by train, the only thing we were hesitant about was luggage storage while in the park. We flew into Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and left out of Frankfurt Airport.

When traveling through Europe, always check for Karnevals/Kermesse which are giant carnivals/festivals. We came across at least four of them on this trip, all with a bonus roller coaster or two! These carnivals/festivals are incredible with delicious food and wild rides, we even found one with a traveling log ride and one with a traveling river rampage.

Taron at Phantasialand (Germany) was one of our favorite rides from the trip. Amazing air time, well paced, incredible theming in such a small, compact space.
Super cute park at SchloB Beck Freizeitpark (Germany). There were a lot of do-it-yourself rides, were were extremely fun. They even have a do-it-yourself boat launch. Yes, adults can ride it and Yes, of course we did.
We hit some long lines at Efteling (Netherlands), which they do not offer a fast pass system. But we had a great time anyways. It is probably one of the most beautiful parks we have ever visited.
Tover Land (Netherlands) was another fun park. We did this park in the morning & then drove to Bobbejaanland (Belgium) for the afternoon.
The Kermesse in Luxembourg
Blue Fire at Europa (Germany) did not disappoint, such an amazing ride. They have a single rider queue that goes pretty fast as well!
Another bonus Kermesse in Germany with a Crazy Mouse!
The beautiful Park of Tripsdrill (Germany), definitely a park you don’t want to miss. Also, if you love Germany Wine there are some amazing vineyards to stop and visit on your way to this park.
Additional theming in Tripsdrill (Germany)
One of the traveling river rapid rides we found, this one was right outside of Brussels in Belgium.
Europa Park – Beautiful park with some great food, check out the Raclette for a tasty snack
One of the coolest rides at Efteling called Droomvlucht (Dreamflight). This is a must do. Our friend Benny who grew up in this park as a child took us to this ride first and it didn’t disappoint.

Colorado Coasters

We had the change to go out west & visit the beautiful state of Colorado. In Colorado we visited Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, Elitch Gardens, & Lakeside Amusement Park. While Glenwood Caverns is about a 2.5 hour drive from Denver, it’s totally worth it.

The scenery is just one of the many reasons we love Colorado. The rides are either built right into the landscape or the landscape makes for the most beautiful backdrop. Here’s some additional information about the parks we visited on our trip:

Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park – Website Here

  • Address: 51000 Two Rivers Plaza Road, Glenwood Springs, CO 81601
  • You don’t want to miss this park! The Giant Canyon Swing literally swings you off the side of a canyon. The swing is positioned on the edge of a 1,300 foot drop. It’s scary, it’s fun, it’s incredible! The haunted mine drop is something you need to add to your list too. Although it’s not a roller coaster, it’s a really great ride built into the mountain. The Alpine coaster is always fun and it has amazing views.
  • If you are hungry once you leave the park, head to Slope & Hatch in the town of Glenwood Springs for some incredible tacos – you won’t be disappointed, they’re worth the wait!

Elitch Gardens Theme & Water Park – Website Here

  • Address: 4601 Sheridan Blvd., Denver, CO 80212
  • Here you’ll find some amazing rides, including The Half Pipe, Mind Eraser, and XLR8R. There’s plenty to do at Elitch gardens and it’s really close to downtown Denver.

Lakeside Amusement Park – Website Here

Havana,Cuba – A Must Do

If there’s one thing you need to put on your bucket list (if it isn’t already there) is travel to Cuba. This beautiful country will easily steal your heart and you will fall in love with the people, culture, food, and sights while visiting. The Cuban people are some of the most friendly, helpful people you will meet in your life. The happiness in Cuba is contagious, everyone is smiling and dancing in the street. People sincerely want to meet you and talk with you and after stopping and listening to their stories, you’ll want to do the same.

We fell in love with Cuba and had to return a second time. We firmly believe that Cuba is better the second time around. Although we’d been before, every moment was like a first. Every person we met was a new friend and every experience was just as exciting. And with all the things do while you are visiting Cuba, your second time is guaranteed to be a completely different experience from your first visit.

The music is incredible and it’s everywhere. If there’s a band performing at a restaurant or bar make sure you ask if they have a CD for sale, likely they do. For only a few dollars you can bring home the sounds of Cuba – something you’ll miss frequently.

Finding out what is needed in order to go to Cuba:

Can you still visit Cuba legally as an United States Citizen? Absolutely!

Cuba can be visited in any season, but we recommend when to go to Cuba I would suggest to go between November and March, when temperatures are not as hot and it rains less. We went to Cuba the first time at the beginning of May, it was rainy and hot but we still had an amazing time. The second time we went earlier in the spring and it was perfect. The prices of flights don’t change much throughout the year, we flew on Southwest Airlines from Ft. Lauderdale. There are several airlines that offer flights directly to Havana and are relatively affordable, we only paid $300 round trip for both of our trips to Cuba.

Along with a round trip ticket, you must buy health insurance, which is required by Cuban national laws – the great thing about this is for us on Southwest, the insurance was included in our airline fees. Check with your airlines to see if they offer the same service so you don’t pay any additional money unnecessarily. Also you must have a Visa, known as tarjeta de turista, which is normally valid for 30 days but can be extended while in Cuba. This costs around 30 US dollars and can be bought through the Cuban consulate.

Americans can legally visit Cuba on the “support for the Cuban people” license tours – yes, they can still go despite all the new restrictions. All it takes is joining a guided tour that works under that definition and that really works to support the local economy by staying in local casas particulares, eating in locally owned restaurants and getting involved in activities that really support the local people and economy. Please make sure you check with the U.S. Embassy in Cuba prior to traveling, as the laws are always changing – You can check updated announcements by visiting their website.

Cuban currencies:

In Cuba there are two things you must know about money – Cash is King and there are two currencies. Do not rely on your credit card, there is a 99.9999% chance it will not work. After multiple trips, we have never found any store, restaurant, etc. that accepted cards. Also, as mentioned, there are two currencies in Cuba- the CUC used by foreigners and by Cubans to buy certain specific things, and worth about one US dollar; and the CUP whose conversion rate is 25 to a CUC and only used by the locals.

It’s also worth mentioning that you cannot legally take Cuban currency out of the country, therefore you will have to exchange your money while in Cuba. You can do this at the airport or banks, however you will want to do this early in the day as these locations can run out of money and you will have to return again the following day.

Security issues in Cuba:

This is a safe country to travel alone, as a single woman, or even with children. Criminality rates are low. Not once did we feel unsafe. I would feel comfortable walking down the street alone in Cuba and not think twice about it. The people are eager to take care of each other and there is a strong sense of pride in the community and trust in others that helps to maintain the security within the country.

The CoCo Taxis – make sure you do this at least once, they’re a blast!

Where to stay in Cuba:

While in cuba, you’ll want to stay at casas particulares, which are private homes where the owners rent up to three rooms to travelers and for a small additional price also provide really good meals.

The Casa Particulares we stayed at were wonderful and the food was incredible. Here’s the two locations we recommend (both have great AC too):

Lamparilla Apartment – Book on AirBNB here

  • Around $60/Night when we went, the room and the time of year causes the price to fluctuate
  • This is in walking distance of so much – La Plaza Vieja, El Capitolio, La Bodeguita, etc.
  • Vanessa will cook you an incredible, huge breakfast for a small fee – totally worth it
  • The AC is amazing
  • It’s a 100% private apartment with a private full bath – the water pressure was great

Casa Lilly – Book on Trip Advisor here

  • $39/Night – You read that right!
  • This is a little ways from downtown Havana, but the views are worth it!
  • The breakfast on the patio in the morning is one of my favorite things in the world
  • The AC is amazing
  • You have your own room with a private full bath, the common area is shared with other travelers and Lily’s family. You can interact as much or as little as you want. Lily’s dad was a super friendly man with great recommendations.
This is the view from Casa Lily – Totally worth everything and more!
Old Cars lined up for Tours, make sure to negotiate a better rate than what they show you on the handout

Things to do in Havana

Among the things to do in Havana, there is visiting one of its many museums and historic buildings; going to one of its lively bars and listen to some live music. Enjoy a mojito and then tour the Havana Club Rum Museum to see where that rum in the mojito came from.

One of the things to do in Havana is go on a sunset walk on El Malecon – 8 km of paved road along the sea, where the ocean waves splash and local go to relax and flirt after a day of work.

Take a walking tour – Free Walking Tour Havana – it’s literally free, but make sure you tip your guide. They will take you all over the city, you’ll climb the steps to see Christ of Havana. You’ll stop at some great places to have a snack and drink, you’ll have a new appreciation for the city. Tours do not occur all the time so check out trip advisor here for more information.

¡Chao pescao!
