Sky Trail to be installed at Cedar Point Sports Center

Ropes Courses, Inc. is excited to announce one of its newest installations of their Sky Trail® ropes course attraction as part of a new Cedar Point Sports Center in Sandusky, Ohio. Scheduled to open in the spring of 2017, world-class amusement park Cedar Point and sport management company Sports Force Parks, out of Georgia, have partnered to create a 57 acre multi-purpose sports complex just minutes away from Cedar Point Amusement Park on Ohio’s north coast. It will be home to traveling tournament players in a variety of sports such as, baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse. The Sky Trail® ropes course addition will challenge them and keep them on their game along with other offerings of a playground, mini golf course, trampoline park and more for both players and families to enjoy.

“We’re honored to be a part of it all!” said Jim Liggett, owner of Ropes Courses, Inc. (RCI).

Participants will experience a whole new level of fun, quite literally, on the Sky Trail® ropes course when compared to the sports fields nearby. It will stand nearly 25 ft. tall, and will officially be the tallest amusement attraction on the Sports Center facility grounds. Participants will enjoy panoramic views of the Cedar Point roller coasters, tournament fields and Lake Erie as they climb through 11 diverse rope activities and soar down the attached Sky Rail™ zip line for a unique and kid-friendly adventure all in its own.

The fabrication and installation of the 7 pole Sky Trail® Navigator and Sky Rail™ zip line attraction will take just under a month to finalize. Much like any other amusement attraction, the Sky Trail® ropes course has a “gazillion” pieces and parts that attribute to its renowned caliber for durability and longevity. This course, composed of nearly 9 tons of steel, 6,500 fasteners and connectors, 1,000 ft. of combi-rope, 300 ft. of plumber and 81 gallons of paint, is sure to have a stand-alone “wow” factor when completed.

RCI installation manager, Josh Shoup states, “This course has a standard layout we have experience putting together and it will only require 1 week’s time for 4 installers to complete the job. We’re confident Sports Force Parks and Cedar Point will be impressed with our capabilities.“

The course takes up 1,800 square feet of space and is designed for additional activities underneath the attraction. Each venue with these courses determines what additional offerings for its clientele works in this space. The Sky Trails® small footprint offers an opportunity for activities in its vicinity or for the not so “thrill seekers” to stay on the ground and watch the players up above.

“The decision to add a Sky Trail® to the Sports Center was a smart one. Young kids and their families go up together and try their luck on the elements they decide they want to go through. When they exit the course, they all have a different perspective on the experience. The only thing that is the same are the smiles!“ said Liggett.

Cedar Point Announces 2017 Additions!

Cedar Point actually made three big announcements today! So 2017 will be a huge year for Cedar Point (Spoiler alert: Mean Streak isn’t getting RMC’d this year. Sorry guys, but they are making tons of huge improvements!)

We’ll start off with the new attractions:

“Big waves are coming in 2017!

NEW Ways to Cool Off

You’ll find all-new attractions designed for big thrills and little thrills.

The new Crystal Rock Cafe will cook up delicious food items guests won’t be able to resist. The menu includes food items like:

  • Fresh-baked flat breads (caprese, buffalo mac & cheese and more)

Next we’ll get into the first of two lodging announcements:

“Cedar Point’s historic Hotel Breakers is growing yet again!

Fresh off of a complete renovation in 2015, an additional six-story tower will be added to the classic beachfront property. The new tower will match the beautiful exterior of the existing hotel and will house 158 guest rooms with many of them configured as connecting family suites. A new outdoor pool area will also make its debut alongside the tower. Construction on the addition will begin after Labor Day and will continue through the 2017 season. It will open to new guests in time for the summer of 2018.

With the new tower, Hotel Breakers will have a total of 669 rooms, making it one of the largest hotels on the Great Lakes – and the love for the property keeps growing. Hotel Breakers has been voted one of the “Top 25 Hotels for Families” by readers of TripAdvisor and is just steps away from both Cedar Point and the new Cedar Point Shores Water Park.

Guests who stay at the Cedar Point Resorts receive the best benefits – Early Entry, allowing access to Cedar Point one hour before the general public to ride some of the biggest attractions, the best deal on park admission tickets (tickets that include free admission to Cedar Point Shores for the length of their chosen 1-day, 2-day or 3-day ticket) and of course, the closest rooms to the world’s greatest collection of rides.

California’s Great America Announces 2017 Additions!

California’s Great America just announced their plans for 2017!

“Today California’s Great America announced that for the 2017 season, it will introduce Patriot, the first floorless coaster in the park’s 41-year history. Patriot will emerge from the soon to be retired Vortex coaster, the oldest stand up roller coaster in the United States. Season Passes for the 2017 season also go on sale today at the lowest price of the season, offering unlimited admission for the rest of 2016 and all of 2017.

Patriot will take riders to a 91-foot height before plummeting them into a 360-degree loop at 45 miles per hour. Patriot’s position in the park makes it a dynamic visual from three different sections of Great America.

The inspiration for the coaster’s name was taken from the fact that the ride is nestled adjacent to All American Corners within a park whose name celebrates America.

The transition from a stand up to floorless ride will include state-of-the-art blue and white trains positioning guests with their feet dangling above the blue and white track.

“With the track visible beneath their fee, Patriot will create unique and exciting new perspectives throughout the ride,” said California’s Great America Vice President and General Manager Raul Rehnborg.

Guests can take their “Last Stand” on Vortex through September 5. Then work will begin to ready Patriot for the 2017 season.

Great America’s season continues weekend operations through Oct. 30, with Halloween Haunt running Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Sept. 24-Oct. 30.

WinterFest debuts and takes center stage Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Nov. 25-Dec. 30, with daily operations Dec. 19-23 and 26-30. Guests can ice skate in front of the iconic Carousel Columbia, admire magnificent displays of lights and décor, view spectacular live holiday shows, experience 18 rides, see Santa’s workshop and Mrs. Claus’ kitchen, and enjoy scrumptious holiday foods around the park.”

Dorney Park Will Debut A Refurbished ThunderHawk In 2016

Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom will honor its 132 years of bringing thrills and family fun to the Lehigh Valley with a refresh to one of its most historic rides.

ThunderHawk, built in 1923 and originally called “The Coaster,” is being refurbished and will bring a bit of nostalgia back to Dorney for the 2016 season. Renovations include all new trains, and the entire coaster is being painted a sharp white, reminiscent of its original design. Bright, white lights will also outline the classic wooden roller coaster, sure to remind riders of the timeless American wooden roller coasters of days gone by.

“We wanted to retain the historic feel of one of America’s most iconic wooden roller coasters,” said Mike Fehnel, Vice President and General Manager of Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom. “Our thought was to keep the refurbishment as true to its original, classic design as possible, complete with an open air train in the front.” Today, ThunderHawk remains one of the great classic American wooden roller coasters. It’s the eighth oldest roller coaster in the United States, and the tenth oldest roller coaster in the world, and it continues to be a favorite among our guests.

Cedar Point will change the Lake Erie skyline once again with over 3,400 feet of thrill ride innovation when it introduces Valravn (val-rey-vuhn), the world’s tallest, fastest and longest dive coaster, in 2016. Valravn is the regal king of birds, swooping in to conquer all other dive coasters on the planet with its powerful and intense maneuvers, massive structure and immense ride vehicles. Valravn will become the 18th coaster to take reign at The Roller Coaster Capital of the World® and will claim its rightful place among other record-breaking roller coasters at Cedar Point.

Riders on Valravn are carried more than 20 stories up to the top of the coaster’s 223-foot-tall first hill. Once there, the train is held perilously over the edge of the first drop for approximately four seconds, giving anxious guests unparalleled views of the park before free-falling a record 214 feet at a completely vertical, 90-degree angle, reaching a top speed of 75 mph!

Valravn then flips its passengers upside-down through a 165-foot-tall Immelmann, a fighter jet-like maneuver that takes the train into a half loop, then a half roll before traveling in the opposite direction. The train then approaches another drop zone – but there’s no stopping this time as riders plunge 125 feet down at a near-90-degree angle once again, twisting and turning upside-down two more times, once through a dive loop and then through a 270-degree roll before completing its epic journey over 3,415 feet of tarnished copper and silver steel track.

Valravn will shatter an astonishing 10 WORLD RECORDS when it debuts next summer, including:

1.Tallest dive coaster (223 feet)

2.Fastest dive coaster (75 mph)

3.Longest dive coaster (3,415 feet)

4.Most inversions on a dive coaster (three)

5.Longest drop on a dive coaster (214 feet)

6.Highest inversion on a dive coaster (165 feet)

7.Most roller coasters taller than 200 feet at one amusement park (5)

8.Most rides at one amusement park (72)

9.Most steel roller coaster track at one amusement park (52,125 feet/9.9 miles)

10.Most roller coaster track at one amusement park (60,110 feet/11.4 miles)

Valravn is also the signature 100th roller coaster designed by the imaginative coaster minds at Bolliger & Mabillard in Monthey, Switzerland, and will feature ride vehicles never before seen on a dive coaster. Riders will sit eight-across on one of three, 24-passenger floorless trains, featuring tiered seating as well as comfortable over-the-shoulder restraints with interlocking seatbelts, much like those on the park’s GateKeeper wing coaster. Valravn can accommodate approximately 1,200 riders per hour and guests must be 54 inches or taller to ride.

1. Loading station
2. 223-foot-tall lift hill
3. Holding brake – hang for 4 seconds over the edge!
4. 90-degree drop
5. 165-foot-tall Immelmann
6. 131-foot-tall second hill
7. Dive loop
8. 270-degree roll
9. Airtime hill

Cedar Point is also making history as the first amusement park ever to utilize 3D virtual reality to introduce a new roller coaster. Guests can experience Valravn in 360-degree virtual reality by downloading the Cedar Point VR app onto their smart phones and inserting them into the Valravn VR Viewer. The app is now available in the App Store and Google Play store. To take full advantage of the virtual reality simulation, Valravn VR Viewers can be purchased by visiting

“The introduction of Valravn is a first for the amusement park industry on many fronts, including the exciting virtual reality experience,” stated Jason McClure, vice president and general manager of Cedar Point. “For the first time ever, guests are able to take an immersive ride on Valravn before it opens next summer – and the actual experience will be unmatched with the tallest lift hill, fastest speed, longest track and most inversions on a dive coaster, right here at Cedar Point, The Roller Coaster Capital of the World.”

Additional details on Valravn can be found online, including real-time updates and live video feeds of the construction, by visiting

Carolina Harbor Waterpark will be included with park admission and will offer guests relaxing moments of tranquility and refreshing thrills by the “shores”, plus delivers a best day ever guest experience. The addition is the latest phase in a $50 million plus multi-year expansion at Carowinds, an effort kicked off by building the world’s tallest and fastest giga coaster, Fury 325, as well as new park food offerings which are regionally relevant.
