Wildwater Kingdom Discontinues Operation

Wildwater Kingdom, the remaining part of the abandoned Geauga Lake amusement park in Aurora, Ohio, has announced that it will discontinue operation this September. The park has released this statement:

“Cedar Fair Entertainment Company has announced that Wildwater Kingdom water park in Aurora, Ohio, will not reopen after the 2016 season. Its final day of operation will be Monday, September 5.

Cedar Fair has been working cooperatively with both Bainbridge Township and the City of Aurora to redevelop the entire property into what will best benefit the surrounding communities. After examining its long-range plans, Cedar Fair has determined that the time is right to begin this transition and will continue to work together with community leadership in the positive future development of the property.

Cedar Fair would like to thank the residents of Northeast Ohio for supporting Wildwater Kingdom each summer.”

The park is also adding a Troika, going by the name of Kaleidescope

“Test your thrill level with a spin on the all new Kaleidescope, a circular ride sending guests on a counter-clockwise trip of weightlessness and acceleration.
Manufactured by HUSS, the ride will feature three arms of seven gondolas moving counterclockwise against the ride’s main clockwise direction.”

The Live E department is getting a new addition, as well, with the addition of Cirque Imagine.

“New in 2017, Cirque Imagine will surely amaze crowds of all ages. This action-packed show features incredible displays of high-flying acrobatics, feats of strength, raw athleticism, beauty, grace and sidesplitting humor. You’re sure to stay on the edge of your seat and keep coming back for more!

Sit back, relax and cool off at the Good Time Theatre and take in a show like no other! Best yet, like all other live shows at Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom, it is included with park admission.

Once you’ve been amazed, stay after the show to meet and greet your favorite performers!”

In addition to all of this, the park will be receiving “Parkside Pavilion”, which will be able to seat 2,000.

Valleyfair Announces a New 230 Foot Star Flyer!

Valleyfair made the announcement yesterday morning:

“Thrill seekers, get ready to reach for the stars as Valleyfair announces plans for a 230-foot-tall Starflyer ride in 2017.

North Star – named to celebrate the region’s affinity to being “up north” and the great outdoors – is a 230-foot-tall tower that will spin riders more than 20 stories above the ground. Seated in two-person chain-link swings that will allow their feet to dangle, riders will slowly begin rotating in a circular motion reaching speeds of up to 40 mph as the swings ascend and descend the tower.

“The annual trip to Valleyfair has always been a family tradition in Minnesota,” says DaveVF2017CloseUp Frazier, Vice President and General Manager of Valleyfair. “The addition of North Star certainly adds to the continued commitment to provide lasting family memories for our guests.”

By comparison, North Star will rank as the second tallest ride in the park next to the 275-foot Power Tower and will occupy the spot soon-to-be vacated by Enterprise, which will be retired later this month. The location positions North Star at the front of the park where, living up to its name, it will serve as a beacon to guide and greet guests on their journey to the park. North Star is the only ride of this type in the upper Midwest.

North Star is manufactured by Austrian-based Funtime. Construction on North Star will begin this month and be complete by early to mid-December. The ride will open to guests in the spring of 2017.

The best way to experience the new North Star is with a 2017 Gold Season Pass, on sale now at the lowest price of the season. Season Pass holders enjoy unlimited visits all season long, including Soak City Waterpark and Valleyscare, free parking, in-park discounts, exclusive offers and events and so much more.”

Worlds of Fun Announces 2017 Additions

Worlds of Fun has announced the additions of two classic flat rides and Winterfest are coming in the 2017 season!

“Worlds of Fun is pleased to announce it will be adding two new unique and thrilling rides in 2017, as well as a completely redesigned front gate to enhance the guest experience next season.

  • Mustang Runner – Three arms with seven gondolas per arm turn one way while the base of the ride spins the other way.
  • Falcon’s Flight – A hair-raising thrill at nearly 100 feet above the ground. This ride spins and rises at the same time with more than 50 riders at a time.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to add two new rides for guests to enjoy. These classic amusement park rides will add thrills unlike anything in the Midwest.” said Worlds of Fun General Manager, Frank Wilburn.

But that’s not all. Families will be able to ring in the holidays next season and enjoy what is sure to be a new family tradition. WinterFest is coming to Worlds of Fun, showcasing 14 favorite holiday characters, spectacular light displays, ice skating, and festive live entertainment. The park will be transformed into a winter wonderland for six weeks beginning November 24, 2017.
“While rides and water slides are the focus for the summer, we pride ourselves on creating memories for families. What better way to create more memories than during Winterfest by starting a new holiday family tradition in Kansas City,” Wilburn added.
WinterFest is included with the purchase of a 2017 Gold Season Pass.

2017 passes are on sale now and also include one visit to the park in 2016.”

Cedar Point Announces 2017 Additions!

Cedar Point actually made three big announcements today! So 2017 will be a huge year for Cedar Point (Spoiler alert: Mean Streak isn’t getting RMC’d this year. Sorry guys, but they are making tons of huge improvements!)

We’ll start off with the new attractions:

“Big waves are coming in 2017!

Announcing the new Cedar Point Shores Water Park! It’s 18 acres of splish-splashin family fun, featuring three completely new water attractions, upgrades to food and merchandise locations, new cabanas and so much more.

NEW Ways to Cool Off

You’ll find all-new attractions designed for big thrills and little thrills.

Point Plummet – It’s a six-story-tall aqua-drop body slide that will simultaneously send four riders on a nearly vertical free fall when the floor drops out from under them!

Starboard Surge & Portside Plunge – Located on the same structure as Point Plummet, these two, five-story tube slides can accommodate single riders or pairs and sends them through an enclosed tunnel before shooting them out into the sun through intense drops and turns.

Lakeslide Landing – A family splashground of epic proportions! There’s 12, kid-sized water slides that line the perimeter of a zero-depth-entry pool, giving kids their own mini water thrills while parents can relax under shade structures and enjoy an oversized lounge and sun deck area.

NEW Ways to Dine

The new Crystal Rock Cafe will cook up delicious food items guests won’t be able to resist. The menu includes food items like:

  • Fresh-baked flat breads (caprese, buffalo mac & cheese and more)
  • Farm salad options (crispy chicken BLT, Asian chicken and chicken Caesar)
  • Pesto-glazed grilled chicken sandwiches
  • Fresh-breaded chicken tenders
  • Waffle fries
  • Tater tots
  • Cheeseburgers
  • Bratwurst
  • Loaded potato wedges

NEW Ways to Chill

The all-new cabanas, located on both sides of the massive wave pool, receive upgrades like free Wi-Fi, charging stations, ceiling fans, TVs and dedicated food and beverage service. The cabanas can accommodate friends, families or even family reunions!

More New Upgrades

Cedar Point Shores will receive a completely new entrance gate, a new poolside bar, new family changing/showering areas, more lounge chairs, additional shade, improved landscaping and unobstructed views of Lake Erie.”

Next we’ll get into the first of two lodging announcements:

“Cedar Point’s historic Hotel Breakers is growing yet again!

Fresh off of a complete renovation in 2015, an additional six-story tower will be added to the classic beachfront property. The new tower will match the beautiful exterior of the existing hotel and will house 158 guest rooms with many of them configured as connecting family suites. A new outdoor pool area will also make its debut alongside the tower. Construction on the addition will begin after Labor Day and will continue through the 2017 season. It will open to new guests in time for the summer of 2018.

With the new tower, Hotel Breakers will have a total of 669 rooms, making it one of the largest hotels on the Great Lakes – and the love for the property keeps growing. Hotel Breakers has been voted one of the “Top 25 Hotels for Families” by readers of TripAdvisor and is just steps away from both Cedar Point and the new Cedar Point Shores Water Park.

Guests who stay at the Cedar Point Resorts receive the best benefits – Early Entry, allowing access to Cedar Point one hour before the general public to ride some of the biggest attractions, the best deal on park admission tickets (tickets that include free admission to Cedar Point Shores for the length of their chosen 1-day, 2-day or 3-day ticket) and of course, the closest rooms to the world’s greatest collection of rides.

Details on rates and reservations for the 2017 season will be available in early fall.”

And finally, a complete renovation of Breakers Express!

“Coming in 2017, Breakers Express receives a complete makeover and transforms into Cedar Point’s Express Hotel! 69 new rooms will be added to the popular overnight haven. All guest rooms feature two queen beds and will be completely renovated with new bathrooms and bedding, mini fridges, microwaves and connecting family suites for additional time to spend together.

In the center of the property, a new splash pad and an outdoor courtyard featuring conversational living spaces will join the whimsical swimming pool and relaxing deck area.

Construction on Cedar Point’s Express Hotel is already in progress and will last throughout the winter.

All of this is being added along with the Cedar Point Sports Center announced several months ago.

California’s Great America Announces 2017 Additions!

California’s Great America just announced their plans for 2017!

“Today California’s Great America announced that for the 2017 season, it will introduce Patriot, the first floorless coaster in the park’s 41-year history. Patriot will emerge from the soon to be retired Vortex coaster, the oldest stand up roller coaster in the United States. Season Passes for the 2017 season also go on sale today at the lowest price of the season, offering unlimited admission for the rest of 2016 and all of 2017.

Patriot will take riders to a 91-foot height before plummeting them into a 360-degree loop at 45 miles per hour. Patriot’s position in the park makes it a dynamic visual from three different sections of Great America.

The inspiration for the coaster’s name was taken from the fact that the ride is nestled adjacent to All American Corners within a park whose name celebrates America.

The transition from a stand up to floorless ride will include state-of-the-art blue and white trains positioning guests with their feet dangling above the blue and white track.

“With the track visible beneath their fee, Patriot will create unique and exciting new perspectives throughout the ride,” said California’s Great America Vice President and General Manager Raul Rehnborg.

Guests can take their “Last Stand” on Vortex through September 5. Then work will begin to ready Patriot for the 2017 season.

Great America’s season continues weekend operations through Oct. 30, with Halloween Haunt running Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Sept. 24-Oct. 30.

WinterFest debuts and takes center stage Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Nov. 25-Dec. 30, with daily operations Dec. 19-23 and 26-30. Guests can ice skate in front of the iconic Carousel Columbia, admire magnificent displays of lights and décor, view spectacular live holiday shows, experience 18 rides, see Santa’s workshop and Mrs. Claus’ kitchen, and enjoy scrumptious holiday foods around the park.”

Adventureland to add “The Monster” in 2016 -By Josh Cameron

Adventureland announced yesterday that they will be adding Monster in 2016! Monster will be the largest investment the park has made since Adventure Bay, costing an estimated 9 million dollars.

Monster will start off with a 133 foot tall vertical lift hill, followed by a 110 degree (20 degrees beyond vertical) first drop to reach its top speed of 65 MPH. The ride will have 5 inversions, including the first zero-g stall in the western hemisphere, and 10 airtime moments during the 2500 foot ride.

Monster’s layout, provided by Adventureland.

Monster doesn’t come without a loss, though. This ride is the replacement of yet another classic log flume. The Log Ride will give it’s last ride on September 7th, 2015, ending it’s nearly 40 year life. While the ride was still structurally sound, technology has advanced since it was built. Also, water rides are very expensive to maintain.

Monster is expected to open in June of 2016!
